From a CNN interview with Jesuit priest, Father Frank Martin:
I think first of all, if anyone(Obama) deserves a degree in law, it’s this constitutional law scholar. I think that needs to be kept in mind. But also, I think the pro-life world is a lot broader than simply abortion. I don’t think you can just sweep the death penalty, torture — things like that under the carpet. The pro-life world is really what Cardinal Bernardin called ‘a consistent ethic of life.’ I think, unfortunately, for a lot of people in the pro-life movement, life begins at conception, but seems to end there. I mean, it just cannot be about simply abortion, and I really lament the fact that — that some of the bishops have turned the Gospel of Jesus Christ into simply abortion. And so, I think we need to look at a broader perspective here.
I think the politics is very relevant here. I don’t think you can call President Obama pro-abortion. I mean, someone who talked about convening a task force between pro-life and pro-choice people is certainly not someone who is pro-abortion. I don’t know anyone who’s pro-abortion, and I think that label is really very misleading.
As I’ve said before, The Consistent Life Ethic is the weapon of choice for those on the Catholic Left. Now it is being used to justify Catholic support for the most pro-abortion president in history.
Bad enough that Father Martin distorted Catholic teaching on abortion, his characterization about pro-lifers is slanderous. Pro-life people aren’t just about protesting abortion. They also refuse to use artificial contraception and oftentimes have large families. Having children is a lot of hard work and sacrifice. Father’s allies on the Left wouldn’t know any of this, as they are too busy contracepting and worrying about things like climate change.
If all our priests and bishops would read and abide by John Paul’s The Gospel of Life, there would be no more legal abortion in the United States. Unfortunately, too many of them would rather study Cardinal Bernadin’s Consistent Life Ethic. Cardinal Berndin’s philosophy has no official Magisterial standing, and it has been twisted and spun in a way that downgrades abortion to just another social issue.
Someday the Church will officially repudiate this destructive philosophy and we will get the truth once again. In the meantime, we get more infanticide. Pity the children.
