The Catholic Spectator

  1. Confession Lines Should Be Forming

    Another pastor steps up:

“If you are one of the 54 percent of Catholics who voted for a pro-abortion candidate, you were clear on his position and you knew the gravity of the question, I urge you to go to confession before receiving communion. Don’t risk losing your state of grace by receiving sacrilegiously,” the Rev. Joseph Illo, pastor of St. Joseph’s, wrote in a letter dated Nov. 21. (Full article)

  2. Catholic School Children Cheer Rabid Pro-Abort

Catholic school children go gaga for Obama:

The Obama family’s activities in the courtyard quickly drew the attention of schoolchildren [St. Columbanus Catholic School] whose windows overlooked the courtyard. They put up a sign against the glass that read: “We love our prez” and screamed when the president-elect waved to them…Minutes later, hundreds of children were brought down to the school auditorium, and Obama loped onstage as they screamed and cheered.

Maybe no one has told them about his fondness for abortion. Maybe it’s time someone did.

  3. Vatican Cardinal Calls for Courageous Christianity

Straight talk from a Vatican cardinal:

“Our true problem is not being a minority, but rather having voluntarily become marginal, irrelevant, because of our lack of courage, so that we will be left alone, because of our mediocrity.” “For Christians,” Cardinal Rylko added, “the moment has arrived to free themselves from a false inferiority complex … to be valiant witnesses of Christ.”

  4. Vigil or Political Statement?

The following is from the Catholic Courier, 11/21/08:

Local Catholics are planning a vigil at Sacred Heart Cathedral this weekend in solidarity with protesters trying to shut down the U.S. Army’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), a school that trains Latin American soldiers in combat. The school, located at Fort Benning, Ga., was known as the School of the Americas prior to 2001. The vigil — sponsored by Pax Christi Rochester and Catholic Family Center’s Office of Social Policy — will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at the cathedral, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester…Vivian Rightmyer, a Rochester Pax Christi member who is coordinating the local vigil, said volunteers have made dozens of white crosses with the names of martyrs on them to show the bloody legacy of the school. “(The school’s graduates) are responsible for some of the worst human-rights abuses in America,” Rightmyer remarked.

  5. The Register Catches Obama Fever

The following is excerpted from an editorial piece by the National Catholic Register:

We at the Register were very focused on the life issue, and will remain so. But we always knew John McCain was no pro-life hero (he supports using taxpayer money to fund fatal experiments on embryos) and though we disagree on much, we always liked Obama…He is a civil, decent man.

What civil, decent man believes it’s OK to let babies die after surviving a botched abortion?

I wonder how many subscriptions will be canceled after readers see this one?

  6. Picking Pockets in the Pew

    From the Catholic Media Coalition:

On November 23rd in Catholic churches around the country ushers will pass collection baskets for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Millions of trusting Catholics will contribute “to help the poor.” What many don’t know is that their hard-earned dollars will pour into the coffers of liberal organizations promoting causes they oppose and which often hurt the poor… (Full article)

  7. Bishop Gracida Nails It

Charleston diocesan administrator, Msgr. Laughlin, had this to say in response to the controversy over Father Newman’s advice to pro-Obama Catholics:

“Therefore, if a person has formed his or her conscience well, he or she should not be denied Communion, nor be told to go to confession before receiving Communion,” Msgr. Laughlin said. “The pulpit is reserved for the Word of God. Sometimes God’s truth, as is the church’s teaching on abortion, is unpopular. All Catholics must be aware of and follow the teachings of the church.”

Bishop Gracida had this to say:

Bishop Emeritus Rene Henry Gracida of Corpus Christi, TX, told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) his reaction to Fr. Newman’s letter “is one of admiration and awe. I find nothing in what he has written that is at variance with the Magisterium of the Church. He is to be congratulated.”

I think I’ll go with Bishop Gracida’s analysis. A person with a well formed conscience would not vote for a notorius pro-abort.

Thank you Father Newman for not speaking with a forked tongue.

  8. Pseudo Catholic Quotes Pseudo Christian

The following statements are attributed to pseudo Christian, Barack Obama, according to pseudo Catholic, Doug Kmiec:

There are some people who don’t have… [much], who don’t have a husband, who are… just barely knowing where they’re going to eat… and the announcement to them of a child coming is… [not great].

Kmiec described another exchange at the same meeting in which Franklin Graham (son of famed Protestant evangelist Billy Graham) asked Obama whether or not the senator believed that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Obama paused, said Kmiec, and responded: “No, I believe He’s my way.”

I see my duty as wider than just your faith tradition. I respect your views, but I also have to respect theirs [those who don't believe abortion is wrong].

Somehow, it doesn’t make me feel better that Obama respects my “faith tradition”. It doesn’t do much good for the innocent babies either.

  9. Father Euteneuer Comments on “Change”

    Father Euteneuer comments on “change”:

Now look at what we’ve done to ourselves. America has made her “choice” for maximum leader and it is not pretty. In fact, it is one of the most devastating blows to American civilization that we have ever undergone, and I do not speak in hyperbole. Even such a saintly figure as Mother Theresa said that “a nation that kills its children has no future;” likewise, an authority like Fr. Benedict Groeschel recently commented that we have entered into “the beginning of the twilight” of our country – dire words that touch on the reality of electing the most extreme, pro-abortion candidate America has ever had the misfortune of occupying the highest office of our land. 10. Hatred on Full Display in Michigan

Homosexual hatred is alive and well in Lansing (from WorldNet Daily):

“‘Jesus was gay,’ they shouted among other profanities and blasphemies as they rushed the stage. Some forced their way through rows of women and kids to try to hang a profane banner from the balcony while others began tossing fliers into the air. Two women made their way to the pulpit and began to kiss,” he wrote. (Full article)

Apparently the mainstream media missed this story (too busy attacking Sarah Palin).

  11. Sister Joan on YouTube

This is why people are fleeing St. Anne:

  12. Jesuit Priest to Speak at Schismatic Organization

Father John Dear, SJ, a well known Catholic ultra pacifist, is apparently going to speak at the schismatic Spiritus Christi tomorrow.

  14. Parish Priest Invokes Nuremberg Defense

A friend of mine recently had a conversation with her parish priest about Joe Biden and his “pro-choice” politics. She expressed the opinion that Biden should be denied Holy Communion until he comes to his senses and denounces the killing of the unborn. The priest responded that Biden is “just following the law”.

  15. In Search of Real Teaching

In yesterday’s column I referred to the “seamless garment” philosophy as being responsible for the death of many of the unborn. I believe that millions of babies have been slaughtered in their mother’s wombs because of this flawed philosophy.
