Is Mccain Truly Pro-life?

“Senator John McCain has consistently taken a strong pro-life position against abortion, has a strong pro-life voting record against abortion and opposes Roe v. Wade,” the group said. From NRTL’s recent statement endorsing John McCain for president.

“I’d love to see a point where it (Roe v. Wade) is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.” John McCain, San Francisco Chronicle, August 19, 1999.

“Earlier this month, the Board of Directors of the National Right to Life Committee – made up of an elected delegate from each state NRLC affiliate – overwhelmingly voted to endorse George W. Bush. That vote recognized Bush’s strong pro-life credentials. It also reflected the recognition among many knowledgeable observers that if elected president, McCain would be unlikely to use the office’s powers to advance the pro-life cause.” From a February 20, 1999 article by NRTL Legislative Director, Douglas Johnson

“He’s now promoting a weakening of the pro-life plank,” said Carol Long Tobias, director of NRTL PAC, referring to McCain’s criticism of Bush’s support for the current Republican plank despite Bush’s support for rape and incest exceptions. “We would not say he’s pro-abortion,” said Tobias. “But he’s not a reliable pro-lifer.” She did not know why some longtime pro-life activists were supporting McCain. “I suppose they trust him,” she said. “Apparently, they’re not looking at his statements.” Carol Long Tobias, NRTL PAC director, speaking about McCain in the year 2000.

“‘It is long past time that pro-life and pro- choice people sat down and agreed on goals we can agree on.’ [said McCain]. The traditional adversaries can agree on the need for adoption and foster care and get beyond the debate over abortion, which he said interest groups want to keep alive because it helps them raise money.” From an October 23, 1999 AP news report.

“John McCain has never indicated his support for a human life amendment,” Parro said. “And his position in support of embryonic stem-cell research indicates that Mr. McCain is not truly pro-life. If you support killing people at the very outset of their lives, then there is no possible way you would support ending legal abortion.” Colleen Parro, Executive Director of the Republican National Coalition for Life from a January 7, 2008 CNS article.

“McCain was asked whether he would reinstate the Reagan era rule that prevents international family planning clinics that receive federal funds from discussing abortion. ‘I don’t believe they should advocate abortion with my tax dollars,’ McCain said, adding that he opposed abortion except in cases of rape and incest. He was then asked how he would determine whether someone had in fact been raped. McCain responded, ‘I think that I would give the benefit of the doubt to the person who alleges that.’ ” NY Times, January 25, 2000.

It would appear that presidential voters this year will be faced with either a passionate advocate for abortion or, at best, a lukewarm advocate for the pro-life cause. John McCain supports the destruction of life at conception through his advocacy for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. John McCain supports the killing of a baby if it is conceived by an act of rape or incest. John McCain supports the killing of babies if the birth would threaten the ill defined health of the mother.

John McCain is certainly a better choice than the rabid pro-aborts Obama or Clinton. The question is, if elected president, will he be a strong advocate for the unborn. Will he support the federal de-funding of Planned Parenthood’s multi million dollar federal subsidy? Will he appoint pro-life justices to the various federal courts? Will he work with a Democratic Congress to enable federal funding of embryonic stem cell research? Will he suddenly come to the realization that a baby shouldn’t be killed just because its mother is raped?

These are the questions that each of us must face up to if we decide to vote for a candidate who appears to be seriously conflicted on the most important issue facing our country. The lives of millions of innocents hang in the balance.
